OPGESLOTEN VRIJHEID

Opgesloten Vrijheid Novel

“confined freedom” a fiction novel by Melanie Hendriks

From a very young age I discovered the joy of books. My parents gave me beside other toys lots of books. Of course, it started all with bedtime-stories and looking at the pictures, but soon I memorized some stories.

My favourite book of all was “the king” from Dick Bruna. At the age of four, I could tell the story by heart. When relatives would come over to visit, I made it look like I could actually read – I loved to impress them!

From the moment I learned how to write I was hooked! I started a diary and wrote about my daily tasks and little adventures. Sleepovers at my grandparents’, play-dates with friends from school, my walks with the neighbour’s dog… whatever came to mind, was worth to be written down.

During primary school I once won a prize for a short story contest organized by the local library. I felt so proud! After my first travels I got a lot “Why don´t you write a book about your endeavours?” For some reason I always wondered if people would be interested enough to read about my journeys.

Like with everything in life… the moment arrived where I felt the need to write a book. Mainly for the challenge of it. Would I be able to do so? After finally making up my mind I took a year of to write a fiction novel at the lovely house of Rob and José in Moraira, Spain.
After approx. 7 months I had finished my book. For me that was it! But my dad insisted…it should be published too! My head was already set on a next project. A journey to Cuba with my younger sister. In the end we decided to self-publish the book.

The first three chapters of my book were written in German. Once I asked my dad to proof read, he became quite upset. As Dutch is my first language, he felt that my first book should be written in my mother tongue. So, I started over again!

There are still some books available:
